Description:

hi everyone!
can you help me identify this thing?
it is very cool...and it appears to be very early, maybe early 1800s....and mysterious!
by the way i have a LOT of pictures so if anyone needs more let me know...only 3 allowed here!
it is of a single piece of carved wood, a long stick with paneled or faceted sides, sort of like an american primitive butter print only...more like 100s of butter prints in one stick.
there are 100s of small intaglio carved symbols, many of the same symbol but slightly different, almost as if someone could tell a story with them. there are animals, people, one side looks like numerous similar versions of an indian or viking man... with hairy paws?!..really weird. flowers, trees, you name it and its probably there, like a story line waiting to happen. it has a hole at the top for either a string or for a nail to hang on the wall.
my first instinct was scandinavian / norway, some sort of printing or stamping tool. but then, it also looks native american indian ...there doesn't appear to be any actual words or alphabet letters or numeral numbers, only PICTURES. so strange... it's driving me nuts at 2am, and i found this site, and here it is!
any help would be GREATLY appreciated. would love to know what this item is and / or where it's from. thanks!
