Dad stated that he found this porcelain rice/vegetable bowl along with a number of other Japanese objects while assigned to clearing out caves on Iwo Jima shortly after the island was declared secured. The only other information that I have is a dealer’s opinion that this type of bowl was for use by senior army officers because of its quality.
The bowl is in mint condition. There are no chips, scratches, cracks or flaws in the finish. The two attached photos are of a different but identical bowl. The attached drawing is of the bowl’s backmark. I haven’t been able to identify it so far. The diamond shape and “RD†suggests a direct tie to the British registration system.
An interesting design feature of this bowl is its Imperial Japanese army star. The bowl’s star has shading on a single pair of adjacent rays accompanied by the typical alternating shading on its other rays. I’ve looked at around 200 such stars on contemporary Japanese objects. All of them have symmetrical alternating shading. All, that is, except for this specific bowl design (see attached drawing). This was certainly done intentionally, but I’m curious as to why. Does anyone know?
I’d like to know more about this bowl: when was the design registered (I think in the 1930s), when was the bowl manufactured and where, was the bowl’s use limited to senior officers (if so, the bowl may have been used by Japanese General Kuribyashi and/or Baron-Colonel Nishi, the two best known Iwo Jima defenders). Other questions include: was it general issue or custom dinnerware, its current value?
I have four excellent pictures and drawings of the bowl but I can't seem to upload them to this website. I'm not registered to receive email because of problems with the website's registration process. Please email me at atreyu1@Hotmail.com and I'll be glad to forward them to you. I'm currently unable to access any comments that may be left for me at this website.
Thank you for your interest, I look forward to hearing from you.
