Description: Hello all. A newbie here to the forum. Can anyone tell me anything about this item, purchased this morning at a local carboot sale. My nose tells it has real (unfaked) age, and it is clearly ethnographic and was made for a specific purpose, but what? It was very cheap so no gain from faking.

It is basically a very large wooden bowl (35cm wide and 23cm tall. The bowl is deep and carved with zoomorphic fish or turtles. There is some wear around the rim and in the centre of this. The base is splayed with simple criss-cross patterns and has chunky handle similarly decorated. This is all carved out of one piece. The wood is very very light and has a fine grain (probably porous so not for liquids).

My thinking was possibly Pacific origin, ie Polynesian, but perhaps someone could suggest another origin?

This is perhaps a Victorian piece brought back by a traveler?

This isn't for sale, so please don't ask. Many thanks for any help folk can give.
