Description: I initially thought this was cast iron but I think the underside would be more pitted if that were the case. How can I tell if this is bronze or something else? I have not done any cleaning on it because I wanted to know its composition first but it appears dark gray or black in color while The underside looks more brown or bronze with some iridescence.

The only marking I have seen on it is a number on the underside -- an underlined 936. The base is approximately 11 inches in diameter and 15.5 inches tall.

I've seen other tree trunk lamp bases but not one quite like this. Please help me determine what this is made of and perhaps how old it is. Thank you!
