Description:
|
This adjustable drafting table was manufactured by Marsh Manufacturing Co., of 542 West Lake St., Chicago in the late 19th to very early 20th century.
The table top has a knob that is turned to adjust the angle of the table. Additionally, the table top swivels on its base. The mechanism/knob that kept it from swiveling is no longer functioning, and therefore it swivels with a push to a corner of it. The cast iron piece which connects the top to the base says, “Marsh Mfg. Co. Chic.” on one side and “Pat Apld For” on the other. The cast iron piece is attached to the top with six screws, one of which is original. The other five are replacement screws. The top does wiggle somewhat when leaned on at an edge, so this is now more of a decorative piece.
The base post has an iron pipe inside which allows the table to be swiveled. There is some cracking and general age-related wear to the base, and unfortunately I did apply a coat of matte black Rustoleum when I purchased the piece. There is an area on the bottom of the base where a piece of the cast iron chipped away. The base is still very strongly attached to the post and this is merely a cosmetic flaw.
The wood top surface measures 29 inches by 22 inches and is ¾ of an inch thick. The base measures 35 inches (without the top section attached). Top and bottom together measure 3 feet, 6 inches high (with the table surface level).
While this piece does have its flaws, I would think that it is worth something...? Especially since it says pattent applied for. I do see a handbill/advertisement on ebay for a different piece of furniture that the same Marsh Mfg. Co. manufactured, however I never find ads for this table. Does anyone have any ideas?
