Description:
|
I recently acquired an antique candlestand that appears to be silver
and brass. It has the markings stamped into the metal base as follows:
made in Italy inside a rectangle, the number 84 inside a square,
Mauritus inside an oval, and what appears to be a makers mark or
perhaps city of origin. The stamps are in the following order: unknown
mark, mauritus, number 84 and last made in italy. Inside the oval
above the word mauritus is what appears to be a crown.
I have looked for info on this item but have found nothing even
remotely similar. While I have found similar 84 stamps the lettering
is different. The 84 seems to refer to the russian equivalent to the
sterling rating and the made in italy doesn't seem to co-cide with the
Mauritus stamp; Mauritus being a principality of france. As for the
first stamp I suspect may be a maker's mark or city of origin, I have
found nothing that even resembles it in appearance in the slightest.
It's apretty cool piece and seems to be unique in that I haven't found
anything like it and can't identify the first stamp. I'd really
appreciate an appraisal and if it is in fact a collector's piece I'd
love to see it in the hands of someone who would appreciate it and
take proper care of it.
sincerely and respectfully,
